The 8. Kürassier welcomes new recruits who wish to become involved in accurately portraying an Imperial German cavalry unit during the First World War.  Joining a re-enactment unit is similar to getting married--sometimes what appears attractive is actually not what you were looking for long term.  As stated in our philosophy, the 8. Kürassier focuses on living history over "powder burning" and encourages each member to actively participate in researching and sharing knowledge on the 8. Kürassier, Germany during the war, and the First World War in general.

To enable the potential recruit to determine whether or not the 8. Kürassier is the unit he is looking for, the unit uses the following procedure:

Guest Status:
The potential recruit is contacted by the unit commander by phone to discuss the unit and the potential recruit's expectations.  Following this contact, the potential recruit will be invited to attend the next event as a Guest of the unit.  The unit will loan the Guest a uniform and equipment for the event.  This will give the Guest the opportunity to participate in the activities of the regiment as well as give the members of the unit a chance to meet him.  After the event, the Guest will be contacted again regarding future participation with the regiment.  If the Guest expresses interest in joining, he will become a Rekrut.

Rekrut Status:
Rekrut status acts as a probationary period.  Each Rekrut will be given a mentor, or Alte Hase, to guide him through his probationary period.  The Rekrut status extends over a period of three events, at the end of which the unit will vote on full membership.  This will allow the Rekrut to learn the drill, signals operation, and field action.

At the successful conclusion of the probationary status, the Rekrut will be listed on the Stammrolle as a "Kürassier" and will be presented with his Schulterklappen, Erkennungsmarke, and Bierkrug.

To help with acquiring the required uniform and equipment parts, the unit has divided the material into three parts which are listed below.  By the end of the probationary period, the Rekrut is expected to have acquired the basic uniform and equipment necessary to accurately portray a Reiter of the 8. Kürassier.

1.  For the first event of the probationary period, the Rekrut needs to have the items listed for Basic Uniform 1.
2.  For the second event, the Rekrut needs to have acquired the equipment for Basic Uniform II.
3.  By the third, and final event of the probationary period, the Rekrut needs to acquire the items of Basic Uniform III.

The Rekrut and the Alte Hase will work together to acquire this equipment from approved vendors or from its stores.  In many cases, the 8. Kürassier has extra items that the Rekrut can purchase at reasonable prices.
